The Film We Live In, 2024-2025
Analog photography,  and sculpture
My work explores the tension between identity and image, questioning whether we are anything beyond the reflections we construct. Using a point-and-shoot camera, I take photos until the roll is nearly finished, then break the camera open, partially exposing the film. The resulting prints capture the liminal space between visible images and darkness, serving as a metaphor for our fragmented, inauthentic projections of self. From the remains of the broken camera, I build a totem—standing at the height of a person—with its lenses replaced by mirrors, symbolizing our devotion to images and our nature as recording machines. The mirrors reflect viewers, drawing them into the work and making them part of the sculpture. By contrasting the fixed past of film with the shifting present of mirrored reflections, I examine how technology shapes our fragile identities. Rooted in my own experience of growing up within cultural, familial, and religious frameworks that dictated who I am, this work invites a deeper inquiry into the essence of self in a world where identity is constantly constructed and redefined.
